June 9-10 at Cox Reservation 100+ artists! Paintings, pastels, watercolors, ceramics, sculpture and more! Proceeds go toward Greenbelt's conservation work around Essex County. Jury applications for new artists will open up in mid-February and will be due April 2. Check ecga.org/artinthebarn for updates and application instructions for new artists!
Take a guided tour of one of Greenbelt's properties affected by last year's wildfires and learn about how fire affects the ecosystem.
RSVP Required WHEN: Thurs., July 13 9:30 am - 11:30 am WHERE: Woodland Acres, Rockport (exact starting point TBA - please register for updates!) Join Greenbelt staff members and former State Ecologist Tim Simmons to learn about the effect of wild fire on local landscapes. We'll visit Woodland Acres, one of the properties that experienced fire during last year's drought season, where we'll examine the signs it leaves behind and talk about how fire can shape a landscape and affect wildlife. Joining us this year, new Greenbelt Stewardship Assistant Nick Merlene, will add his expertise as a former "hot shot" firefighting crew member. Space is limited, so RSVPs are required.
Gaze at the heavens with guidance from the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club at the top of Sagamore Hill!
RSVP Required WHEN: Tues., July 18 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm (Rain date, July 20) WHERE: John J. Donovan Reservation at Sagamore Hill, Hamilton (parking in the lot, but prepare to walk to the top of the hill) The Club will set up their powerful telescopes, help you focus on objects of interest in the night sky, and provide information about what you see there! All ages welcome. Please bring a flashlight for your walk up the hill! Space is limited, so RSVPs are required. Terrain note: The hike up the hill is only about a half mile, but quite steep! Please give yourself plenty of time, wear sturdy shoes, bring a good flashlight or headlamp, and consider bringing a hiking stick. You will be hiking up at twilight and back down in the dark.

Get to know the residents of a beaver pond! From tiny insects, to the beavers themselves, we'll use all our senses to look for signs of life!
WHERE: Bailey Reservation, Haverhill WHEN: Sat., Aug. 5 3:00-4:30 pm Join Greenbelt and Northshore Nature Programs to learn all about a pond habitat! Who lives there? What do they eat? How do they get around? We'll use our senses to find some answers to those questions and more! Terrain: Easy
Some critters get a bad rap! But there is lots to love about the creepy, wiggly, and crawly creatures in our woods!
WHERE: Vineyard Hill Reservation, Hamilton WHEN: Sat., Oct. 21 3:00-4:30 pm Join Greenbelt and North Shore Nature Programs to meet some of our favorite critters! We'll look for spiders, bugs, centipedes and millipedes, as well as signs of cool predators like owls, coyotes, and weasels. Nothing scary about this walk - just good, fun science!
