148 acres from Ipswich River to Bradley Palmer State Park Conserved!
Since the 1980s, when former Greenbelt President Ed Becker toured the property in the back of Major General Patton’s pickup truck, this amazing land had been a high conservation
priority for Greenbelt. We are delighted to announce that we have successfully met our fundraising goal to acquire and conserve Green Meadows Farm & Vineyard Hill! These 148
acres in Hamilton and Topsfield represent some of the most resource-rich and important agricultural and watershed land in Essex County; now they will be protected forever.
We are overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of support from donors near and far who love this land for so many reasons: for its trails, farmland, riverfront, history, habitat and beauty.
THANK YOU for helping us protect it, and making this decades-long conservation priority a reality.
Green Meadows Farm was known for years as one of the few certified organic farms on the North Shore, raising vegetables, fruits and heritage breeds of livestock. When the farm stand closed in
2017, the buildings were removed as the owners explored alternative plans for the property. When the owners abandoned those plans, the farmland fortunately remained in agricultural
production, and continues to be available for a new crop of farmers to grow healthy local food.
Preservation & the Future:
Preserving this land Increased and secured year-round recreational access for public enjoyment
Permanently protected prime agricultural land for food production
Safeguards watershed protection and priority wildlife habitat
Connects to several thousands of acres of protected land
Greenbelt's ongoing efforts include continued fundraising to steward this magnificent property for public enjoyment, and to carefully plan for its agricultural future. If you would like
to be part of the next phase of this exceptional project, we welcome your donation.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Patton family for their generous conservation efforts over the years and for the opportunity to purchase and conserve this property. "
A Vision for the Property
Green Meadows Farm will remain in active agricultural use. Greenbelt will take time to assess the best model for continued production, likely partnering with local farmers to sustainably
utilize the prime agricultural soils.
Vineyard Hill will be a premier Greenbelt Reservation, open from dawn to dusk and offering access to miles of trails and connections to neighboring conserved land.
