Since the 1980s, when former Greenbelt President Ed Becker toured the property in the back of Major General Patton’s pickup truck, this amazing land has been a high conservation priority for Greenbelt. For decades, neighbors, community members and visitors have also appreciated the beauty and bounty of this land. Located on Asbury Street between the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary and Bradley Palmer State Park, Green Meadows Farm & Vineyard Hill are 148-acres of some of the most resource-rich, scenic, and important agricultural land in all of Essex County.
Greenbelt now has the opportunity to permanently protect this incredible land. The Patton Family worked generously with Greenbelt for years to protect significant portions of this land.
Green Meadows Farm was known for years as one of the few certified organic farms on the North Shore, raising vegetables, fruits and heritage breeds of livestock. When the farm stand closed in 2017, the buildings were removed as the owners explored alternative plans for the property. When the owners abandoned those plans, the farmland fortunately remained in agricultural production, and continues to be available for a new crop of farmers to grow healthy local food.
Across Asbury Street, Vineyard Hill is 89 acres that offers an incredible ridgeline trail attractive to equestrians, runners, hikers and nature enthusiasts. Trails on Vineyard Hill connect directly to Greenbelt’s Shaw Field, the adjacent (and permanently protected) Brick Ends Farm, and Bradley Palmer State Park and beyond.
Recently, a generous donor offered to match the next $150,000 raised and we are delighted to announce that that challenge has successfully been met!
Greenbelt is grateful to the Patton Family for the opportunity to acquire this land.
Under the terms of the agreement, Greenbelt has until the end of October 2019 to raise the necessary funds for the $4 Million purchase. To date, close to $3.7 million has been raised from individual donors.
Recently, a generous donor offered to match, dollar for dollar, the next $150,000 raised. We are delighted to announce that the challenge has successfully been met! However, we still have more than $300,000 left to raise to meet our goal.
Please give the most generous donation possible to make the permanent protection of Green Meadows and Vineyard Hill a reality.
If you are considering a multi-year commitment, a gift of stock or a planned gift, please contact Cathy Lanois email@example.com or 978-768-7241 ext. 13 at Greenbelt for assistance.
A Vision for the Property
If successful, Green Meadows will remain in active agricultural use. Greenbelt will take time to assess the best model for continued production, likely partnering with local farmers to sustainably utilize the prime agricultural soils.
If protected, Vineyard Hill will be a premier Greenbelt Reservation, open from dawn to dusk and offering access to miles of trails and connections to neighboring conserved land.
