Early last week there was only one bird in the nest, the smallest chick (female)? It lingered about, solo, for a week or so, but beginning 9/18, it's now gone. So this will be my last report unless I spot it again.

From our house.
Sept. 18 was the last day we saw an osprey on our nest or in the area. Since we have seen them every day since March 27, when Ollie arrived like clockwork as he does every year, we can assume that the last of the 3 fledglings has headed south. We look forward to next March.

2 of the four Osprey have flown away, leaving 2 here. 1 is definitely a fledgling as it displays the typical wing actions of the young along with a consistent call, "Feed me!"
The other Osprey catches fish and eats. Not sure if it shares with the "Feed Me" Osprey.
Wonder: isn't it late for the birds to be here?
I did not report in August, but during the August sunny days, 2 fledglings were learning to fly and fish. they were over my head often while I tended my garden.

No osprey present. Only a very few sticks remaining on the platform. On my way to island I had seen what looked like the beginnings of a osprey nest on a power pole on the roadside about a quarter of a mile from the road end and island parking. I was not there on my last visit. In talking to a neighbor who lives close by, another attempt to building on the same pole had been removed by "Audubon" some two months earlier. Was it the Sawyer's pair looking for a "safer" site ??

Jake is learning some tough lessons from his dad. The dad has not brought in any food this morning. Jake is screeching loudly, flying off the nest and circling his dad who is on the marsh post, and then flies back to the nest. He has done this over and over for the past 30 minutes. I believe the dad is trying to get him to go find his own fish.

One fledgling had difficulty in one landing, came in too low, but used its bill to grab the edge then its talons and flapped hard to get over the edge.

No adult present when I arrived. Female arrived about ten minutes later clutching good-sized freshly caught fish. Settled on nest. Kept fish safely under one talon and checked surroundings -360. I checked around for any sign of male. Instead found a sub-adult Bald-headed Eagle (may be third season) perched and preening in a dead tree due north on a small island just south of the Parker River.
Wonder if it's presence had anything to do with nest failure this year or loss of chick last year ??

Steady breeze with nearly clear skies alternating at times with breeze dying down with clouds moving in. This happened several times.
Young bird on rim of nest; one adult landed on nest for seconds and flew away, leaving nothing; later saw on branch of nearby tree, one adult eating; adult finished eating and left area; youngster was yelping; spotted 1-3 large birds flying very high in circles but could not identify them and they left area; still later an adult Osprey landed on nest (I did not see arrival) and sat on branch of the nest tree, watching as youngster ate; youngster dropped down inside nest after meal was finished & did not comeback up for several minutes (Nap time?); adult flew to nest from branch with young one up for a couple of minutes before spreading wings and returning down into nest; finally adult flew away while young one remained unseen in the nest
Big Thank You for fixing the platform! It's so much safer.
Note: At one point, I thought another adult had come to the nest. On further observation from another angle, I realized that it was the young Osprey. (S)he was nearly as large as the adult and had a wide wing span. The only way I could tell the difference was in the coloring of the feathers...adult more black and white with no spots and youngster more brown and yellowish-white with polka-dots all down back feathers.

INTRUDER ON NEST
4:41 pm Banded intruder (female?) on nest with Annie and chicks. Annie somewhat passive; chicks calm.
4:50 Intruder eating fish on nest — I didn’t see how fish came to be at nest. Chicks trying to get some of fish from intruder, but not successful.
4:56 Annie vocal and both adults face off. Shortly thereafter Annie tries to drive intruder off nest. Both have wings extended. Intruder leaves nest but circles around 4 times while Annie leaps upward to keep him/her away. Then intruder seems to be led away from nest by Annie; nest with only chicks in it for a while.
5:05 Both Annie and Squam return to nest post; Squam has piece of fish, which Annie grabs from his talons and begins to feed the very hungry chicks. Squam flies off nest post but returns shortly and stays on “staging” post away from nest.
5:14 Fish devoured; Annie leaves nest; Squam remains on his post — intruder still not visible at 5:30.

Aggressive chick dominating the feeding; shyer one is trying to eat from the tail of the fish but is not very successful in tearing fish apart. Yesterday afternoon we observed the first flight of one of the fledglings. Very shaky with several missed approaches for landings and an eventual shaky landing on the second platform and a later return to the nest. Meanwhile a second fledgling was beating its wings and achieved a few short lift-offs and landings on the nest. This morning the second fledgling had its first flight from the nest to the second platform. At present one fledgling remains in the nest, an adult and two fledglings are perched on the second platform and one adult (probably the male) is perched on the third platform.

One adult on nest, after 10 min it flew low around and came back. Couldn't tell--too--far if it had a fish in its talons. Might have been feeding chicks I couldn't see, or not, really too far to tell. They built a high nest. Seen them do this many times so don't know if they are successfully fishing and feeding chicks or not. They started nest a couple weeks or so later than SAU-03.
When they are flying model airplanes, which at this time of year they always are when I'm there, I have to stay decidedly further from the edge of the marsh so have more trouble seeing what is actually happening. Just a fact, I don't have a spotting scope!
2021-07-179:40am to 9:55amat: Saugus
Saw 4 ospreys on nest. Light such that could only see in silhouette so couldn't tell young from adults, and they all looked about same size. One appeared to feed one chick, and before I left one flew off.
There had been 3 chicks though I only saw 2 last time, so possibly 3 chicks and one adult?
One guy in model airfield said he'd seen some wing-flapping during the week, but I didn't see any today.

Male was down on the marsh some distance away. Female was perched on the nest with the smallish nestling. The fledgling flew in and made an awkward landing. The female went to perch on the leg of the stand and the fledgling tried to leave again but quit after a brief try.
Might have been the return from a first flight? This one much larger than the other which I not seen before.
