Mount Hunger – Lyasis Pond

In June 2024, Greenbelt successfully acquired 90 acres of land in Essex and Gloucester from the Pennoyer family, helping to protect an important wildlife habitat, a tributary to the Great Marsh, and public access to a popular trail network. The acquisition also expanded the area of protected forestland that safeguards Gloucester’s drinking water supply system.
The Mount Hunger property borders more than 600 acres of land owned by the City of Gloucester, Greenbelt, and the Manchester Essex Conservation Trust, effectively consolidating previously unprotected parcels into a larger, connected conservation area. This expanded space is home to a network of trails, including woods roads and single-track paths, which are popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, offering access to the broader trail system.
