With its diverse array of tree species and a vibrant ecosystem of plants and animals, Crystal Gorge is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking natural beauty. As you explore the property, you will also encounter a number of iconic stone walls — remnants of the land’s past as pastureland — adding a unique historical dimension to its natural beauty.
In addition to its wooded areas, Crystal Gorge offers a wonderful opportunity to observe wetlands and vernal pools — seasonal water features that provide critical habitat to a variety of species.
The property boasts trails that are surrounded by an array of conservation properties, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and a wide range of other outdoor activities.
This property is primarily owned by the City of Haverhill, which also owns other conservation lands surrounding Crystal Lake. In 2023, Greenbelt expanded the area by purchasing an adjacent 19-acre parcel and establishing a new trail loop on the property.
The forest is a diverse blend of Black Oak, White Oak, White Ash, Red Maple, Black Birch, Shagbark Hickory, White Pines, and Hemlocks. Vernal pools throughout the property provide vital breeding grounds for species such as the Spotted Salamander and Wood Frog. The wetlands are home to various turtle species, while the uplands offer a chance to spot porcupines nestled in the rocky outcroppings that scatter the landscape.
