Dear Greenbelt Community,

Today marks my first day as Greenbelt’s new President. It is a privilege to lead an organization that has been a significant part of my life and a constant source of inspiration for more than a decade. As a longtime North Shore resident, I have greatly enjoyed exploring the diverse outdoor spaces in our region and connecting with the remarkable individuals who contribute to its unique character. I look forward to stepping into this new role and working together with all of you to further our mission.

Since 1961, Greenbelt has been dedicated to safeguarding the essential landscapes of Essex County. Recently, our team celebrated a major milestone: the conservation of 21,500 acres since our founding. These acres are more than just numbers — they are a living tapestry of our shared experiences, encompassing thriving local farms, scenic hiking trails, and cherished places where we connect with nature.

This milestone is a testament to the incredible people who have made it possible. From the dedicated staff and Board of Directors to the passionate community members, every step forward has been a collective effort. Since I started at Greenbelt, I have had the privilege of working alongside and learning from these remarkable individuals. I am especially grateful to Kate Bowditch, who just retired as Greenbelt’s President, for her commitment to strengthening our mission and broadening our impact. I’ve learned a great deal under Kate’s leadership, and while I’ll miss our partnership, I sincerely wish her all the best in her next chapter.

As we look to the future, Greenbelt’s work has never been more critical. The pandemic highlighted the importance of free and equitable access to nature, while the effects of our changing climate underscore the need for healthy natural landscapes as a key part of our broader mitigation strategies. Meanwhile, our farmers, both seasoned and new, remind us of the value of locally grown food and the necessity of sustaining a thriving agricultural economy.

I look forward to connecting with many of you in the coming months, whether on the trails, in the woods, or at one of our public events. I also warmly invite you to join us on Thursday, September 19, at 5:00pm at the Cox Reservation in Essex, as we celebrate the remarkable tenure of Kate Bowditch. In her honor, I encourage you to consider making a special gift to Greenbelt.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Greenbelt’s mission.

Sincerely,

Chris LaPointe
President
