At the annual Osprey Dinner held on September 10 for nest monitors, Director of Stewardship Dave Rimmer shared an update on this year’s Osprey season, and by all measures, it was a remarkable success. A total of 90 Osprey pairs were documented north of Boston — up from 80 last year — producing an impressive 141 fledglings. Nearly 30 dedicated volunteer nest monitors also submitted more than 1,800 reports on Osprey activity, while the installation of several new nesting platforms further supported the population’s growth.
Annie and Squam, the stars of Greenbelt’s Osprey Cam in Gloucester, were back for their seventh consecutive summer, successfully raising two fledglings. Like other Osprey who return to nest in Essex County each year, they have now migrated south, potentially as far as South America or Cuba. The Osprey Cam garnered over 75,000 views worldwide, giving viewers the opportunity to watch the action unfold in real time.
During the Osprey Dinner event, Dave extended a heartfelt thanks to all those who made it such a productive year. “That includes all of our dedicated volunteer nest monitors, whose tireless efforts and numerous reports have been invaluable in tracking and supporting our Osprey population,” he said. “It also extends to our generous donors, whose contributions have strengthened the Osprey Fund and secured the long-term sustainability of the program. With this support, we’re confident that the Osprey Program will continue to flourish and have a lasting impact for years to come.
